BEBOP COWBOYS-Canadian Dance Hall
Rating: FOUR STARS
Western swing, the depression-era Southwestern dance hall fusion of country string band music with big band jazz,
is alive and well in the hands of Toronto's Bebop Cowboys. This CD is a constant delight as the Cowboys mix Bob
Wills classics like Brain Cloudy Blues and Fat Boy Rag with other old songs and some originals that sound like
they could be from the music's golden era. In addition to the six-piece band, many of the cuts feature cameos by
a bunch of their musical friends including Prairie Oyster's Russell deCarle, who shines on three tunes, and Chris
Whiteley whose vocal on Dancing on a Saturday Night is like a countrified Jimmy Rushing. Sarah Harmer's singing
on Stardust is simply gorgeous.
